Interactive Tip Calculator

Use this free tip calculator to figure out the tip and split the bill any way — by percentage, by dollar amount, or per-person share. Handles pre-tax or post-tax tipping for any number of diners.

How to use this tip calculator

Enter the bill amount, the tip percentage, and the number of people. The tip, total, and per-person share appear instantly. Toggle to post-tax tipping or use the service-type presets to apply a regional or service-category convention.

Worked example: $48 dinner for two, 18% pre-tax

A couple’s $48 pre-tax dinner bill at a sit-down restaurant:

  • Tip (18% of $48): $8.64
  • Sales tax (8%): $3.84
  • Total bill: $60.48
  • Per person: $30.24

At 20% on the same bill: tip $9.60, total $61.44, per person $30.72. The 2% bump is less than $1 per person — meaningful for the server, negligible for most diners.

Worked example: $96 group dinner for four

A group of four dining out with a $96 pre-tax bill:

  • Tip (20%): $19.20
  • Sales tax (8%): $7.68
  • Total: $123.04
  • Per person: $30.76

For larger groups, many restaurants automatically add 18-22% gratuity. Check the receipt before calculating — adding tip on top of an auto-gratuity over-tips the server.

Tipping on pre-tax vs. post-tax

Two conventions exist in the US:

  • Pre-tax (lower base): Tipping on the subtotal before tax. Standard in most regions and recommended by most etiquette guides.
  • Post-tax (higher base): Tipping on the total including tax. Common in some metropolitan areas and feels more generous to the server.

The difference on a $48 pre-tax bill at 18%: $8.64 vs. $9.34 — about $0.70. On a $200 bill at 20%, it’s $40 vs. $43.20 — a $3.20 difference. Either is acceptable; pick what feels right.

Mental math shortcuts

For quick mental math without a calculator:

  • 10%: move the decimal one place left. $48 → $4.80.
  • 15%: 10% + half. $4.80 + $2.40 = $7.20.
  • 18%: round 20% to $10, then subtract 10%. $10 - $1 = $9. Approximate.
  • 20%: double the 10%. $4.80 × 2 = $9.60.
  • 22%: 20% + 2%. $9.60 + $0.96 = $10.56.

These shortcuts cover most tipping scenarios and run in seconds at the table.

Tipping outside the US

Tipping customs vary dramatically internationally:

  • Japan, South Korea: Tipping is considered rude. Service is included.
  • Most of Europe: 5-10% if service charge is not already on the bill. Round up for taxis.
  • Mexico, Caribbean: 10-15% standard; USD often preferred.
  • Middle East, parts of Asia: Service charge of 10-15% typically included.
  • Australia, New Zealand: Tipping not expected; 10% appreciated for exceptional service.

The calculator’s preset conventions adjust to these regional norms.

Tips for fair tipping

  • Tip on the pre-tax amount when the bill is large. The dollar impact of pre-tax vs. post-tax is meaningful on a $300 dinner but trivial on a $25 lunch.
  • Adjust for service quality and complexity. A $20 tip on a $100 bill is average; 25%+ is appropriate for attentive service with complex orders.
  • Consider the kitchen vs. server. In many restaurants, servers tip out 3-5% of sales to kitchen and bar staff. A smaller tip to the server means less to the kitchen.
  • Don’t punish for kitchen errors. Long waits, wrong orders, and cold food are often outside the server’s control. Speak to a manager before adjusting the tip downward.
