Interactive BTC to USD Calculator

Use this free BTC to USD calculator to convert bitcoin to US dollars (or vice versa) at any price. Includes satoshi-level precision and exchange fee modeling for accurate net proceeds.

How to use this BTC to USD calculator

Enter the BTC amount and the current or historical BTC price. The calculator returns the USD value, satoshi equivalent, and net proceeds after any fees. Toggle to USD → BTC direction in the advanced settings.

Worked example: 0.5 BTC at $110,000

Half a bitcoin at $110,000 per BTC:

  • USD value: $55,000
  • Satoshi amount: 50,000,000 sats
  • Net proceeds (after 0.5% fee): $54,725

At $250,000 BTC, the same 0.5 BTC is worth $125,000 — net of $625 fee, $124,375.

Worked example: $1,000 to BTC at $110,000

A $1,000 purchase at $110,000 BTC:

  • BTC equivalent: 0.00909091 BTC
  • Satoshi amount: 909,091 sats
  • Net BTC (after 0.5% fee): 0.00904545 BTC (~$995 worth)

For DCA, this is roughly the size of a small monthly buy. For larger purchases, the fees matter more in absolute terms but the percentage stays similar.

Lightning Network transactions typically use satoshi-level amounts (1-100,000 sats). On-chain transactions are usually denominated in full BTC or larger fractions.

Exchange fee modeling

Major exchanges charge different fee tiers:

  • Coinbase Advanced Trade: 0.4-0.6% maker/taker
  • Kraken Pro: 0.16-0.26% maker/taker
  • Gemini ActiveTrader: 0.20-0.40% maker/taker
  • Binance.US: 0.10-0.50% maker/taker
  • Robinhood: no fee (spread-based instead)
  • Swan Bitcoin: 0.5-1.0% recurring buy

For larger conversions, OTC desks and bitcoin ATMs have different fee structures worth comparing. The calculator’s fee field accepts any percentage to model your actual cost.

Tax considerations

In the US (and most jurisdictions), converting BTC to USD is a taxable event. The gain or loss is calculated as:

Capital gain/loss = (Sale price in USD) − (Cost basis in USD)

For BTC accumulated through DCA, cost basis is typically the average of all purchases. For tax reporting:

  • Each buy is recorded with date, amount, and USD cost
  • Average cost basis = total invested / total BTC
  • Long-term (>1 year) gains: 0/15/20% federal
  • Short-term (<1 year) gains: ordinary income tax rates

The calculator’s historical price input lets you calculate fair market value at any transaction date for tax reporting.

Tips for BTC to USD conversion

  • Compare exchange fees. Same conversion, different platforms can have 0.5%+ fee differences. Use the calculator to model.
  • Consider batch conversions. Frequent small conversions accumulate fees. Fewer, larger conversions are usually cheaper per dollar.
  • Watch the spread. Beyond the published fee, exchanges embed a spread in the quoted price. OTC desks offer better prices for large conversions.
  • Plan for taxes. Set aside 15-25% of gains for federal taxes (state varies). Selling without planning the tax bill leads to April surprises.
  • Use limit orders. For large conversions, market orders may fill at unfavorable prices. Limit orders let you set a target price.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting about fees. A 1% fee on $100,000 is $1,000. Always model the net amount.
  • Confusing spot price with effective price. The spot price is the market; the effective price includes fees and spread. The calculator shows both.
  • Not tracking cost basis. Without proper records, you may overpay tax. Maintain a transaction log with dates, amounts, and prices.
  • Converting during high volatility. Spreads widen during volatility, increasing effective cost. Convert during stable periods if possible.
